
Carolyn Lam
Concertmaster and AdAO Vice President
Carolyn Lam is both a concert violinist and a concert pianist. She gained first class Honours in violin performance at the Elder Conservatorium, University of Adelaide in 1995. Since the age of 8, she has won many AMEB, Eisteddfod and Elder Conservatorium prizes and scholarships. Carolyn gives numerous public performances on both instruments and has performed in Australia, Europe and Asia as either chorister, instrumental soloist or orchestral musician. Solo appearances with professional orchestras include the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra as violinist and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and Adelaide Chamber Orchestra as pianist. In 1993, 1994 and 1997, Carolyn represented South Australia on both instruments in the finals of various national competitions and in 1996, was a finalist in the Hong Kong National Piano Competition. Other musical engagements have included pop/rock concerts with the Electric Light Orchestra, Split Enz/ENZSO and the Main Event with John Farnham, Olivia Newton-John and Anthony Warlow. Carolyn has also performed as violinist and pianist for Adelaide based Leigh Warren and Dancers since 1993, highlights with them including the Adelaide and Melbourne seasons of Philip Glass's opera Akhnaten and the Adelaide season of Einstein on the Beach with the Adelaide Vocal Project, and performing in the presence of His Royal Highness Prince Edward. Carolyn's solo performances have been heard on ABC Classic FM, Radio 5UV, Radio 5MBS and she has appeared as a violinist in the wedding episode of Australia's premiere television drama series McLeod's Daughters. She has also recorded for such television commercials as Baker's Delight, Hardy's Winery, Disney UK, Bridgestone Tyres and Arnott's and for the recent Anifex short film Gargoyle. Orchestrally, she has played for the Adelaide Chamber Orchestra and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, and was a member of the ASO on their 1996 tour of South-East Asia, and with ENZSO in 1997. In 1998 she was a member of the ASO in Wagner's Ring Cycle in Adelaide. Carolyn has been the concertmaster of the Adelaide Art Orchestra since its inception and has also performed in orchestras supporting the Australian tours of the English National Ballet, the Kirov Ballet, Kiev Ballet and the State Ballet of Russia. Carolyn is an active chamber musician and is the leader and founding member of The Amicus String Quartet. She is the repetiteur for the Adelaide Vocal Project and has worked in this capacity for the State Opera of South Australia and the Adelaide Philharmonia Chorus. Carolyn has participated as violinist and pianist in the Dartington International Summer School in England and has given solo and chamber music recitals in London and Oxford. She will be performing in London, Cambridge and Berlin in April 2007.
